Should we oblige to feminism?
(written by Tafri Oghenetejiri Tessy)
What is feminism??
Feminism is a range of social movements, political movements, and ideologies that aim to define and establish the political, economic, personal, and social equality of the sexes. … Changes in female dress standards and acceptable physical activities for females have often been part of feminist movements.
Feminism, by definition, is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities. It is the social, political and economic equality of the sexes. After observing the gender stereotypes that infiltrate our society I decided that I was a feminist. This was something that seemed uncomplicated to me.
According to Merriam Webster dictionary, feminism is the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes.
With this definition, I see feminism as a waste of time, but am I in support of not empowering a female child? NO.
Many people even fear that feminism will bring about negative shifts in relationships, marriage, society, culture
This brings me to my story. Sometime ago, I was having a discussion with a colleague of mine about this same topic, and a woman made this statement. “Girl pikin dey disgrace person”I felt a great pain within me.
Growing up as a girl child has not been easy on me, especially since after I lost my dad. I had so many encounters with the opposite sex and that wasn’t funny at all. With the help of God and with my mum’s words of encouragement, I was able to overcome. With my experiences, I made up my mind never to have a girl child.
Why didn’t I want a Female child??
I was afraid of not been able to raise her in a Godly and moral way so that she will not go astray and I don’t end up with the statement, “girl pikin dey disgrace person”.
When we have people that pledge to feminism, there is a reason why. So many organization prefer to hire male applicant Than a female applicant, even if the female applicant is capable and qualified for the job and that is wrong. I remember vividly that my father’s company where he worked doesn’t employ any female, even to as far as for internship.
When we come to churches, many prefer to attend churches head by a male pastor rather than female pastor. I came in contact with a man that said he will never be a member of a church head by a female pastor, but this doesn’t make sense to me at all because if they study their Bible very well, women were also useful in the Bible. (Rom 16: 1-6).
When a female who is not married gets pregnant, she becomes a disgrace to the family and sometimes been thrown out of the home. The question is; did she get herself pregnant? No. But nobody talks about the boy. All fingers are pointed across to the girl wherever she is found but for the boy, he gets to walk freely on the street.
With all that has been happening around me lately, I feel a female child should be given the same privilege that a male child has. A husband should not send his wife packing because she has only female children. Children are gift from God and not from her.
If you have female or male children, give them same opportunity, let it start from us, so the society can see and adopt same method. Everything in life starts from the family unit. That’s why they say “charity begins at home”
Does this make me agree to feminism? No. In as much as we are image of God and equal in his eyes, we have different role to play in this life. That’s why the Bible says woman should submit to her husband and for the husband to love his wife just as Christ loves the church. (Eph 5:22-25) these are two different roles. A man can only pregnant a woman but it is the woman who carries the child in her womb. Does the man have a womb? No. This is also a different role for both man and woman.
The feminist movement has effected change in Western society, including women’s suffrage; greater access to education; more equitable pay with men; the right to initiate divorce proceedings; the right of women to make individual decisions regarding pregnancy (including access to contraceptives and abortion)
As for me, I have decided to have female children even if is only female children, I am fully prepared for it. I have overcome my fears and with the help of God I will be a great mother.
